MARAMURES, ROMANIA: Where Past Remained.

Maramures, a county surrounded by the northern range of the Carpathians mountains, may be one of the biggest areas in Europe where a rural lifestyle still keeps patterns from old ages. Here, land is still worked with horses and manual ploughs, traditions remain untouched and religion retains those grave patterns from the past.
For some reason, Ceaucescu’s wills of a centralised Romania kept apart this area North of the country. Land distribution remained kept under familiar ownership and collectivization was limited to the grass medows up in the highlands. Little was changed then and little is changing nowadays. Although this era of social media and smartphones have made its print in Maramures, specially amongst youngsters, a lot stays the same as it ever was.
